The Lutz Auto Toyota/Lexus Coolant Alarm works with select Toyota and Lexus vehicles that use Toyota/Lexus part # 83420-16040 for the gauge sensor. It is designed to alert you audibly if your engine begins to overheat. Most people have looked down at a climbing temperature gauge only to wonder how long the engine has been overheating. This gauge is made to sound the alarm when the temperature has reached approximately 220-225F.
Many of the Toyota and Lexus vehicles from the 90's and early 2000's didn't come with a dummy light or any other indicator except for the factory temperature gauge from the factory -- Now you can add one! You will need to confirm that your model/year/engine type uses part number 83420-16040 for the coolant temperature gauge sensor.
This alarm has a calibration procedure that not only adjusts for differences from model to model, but also allows the coolant alarm to compensate for the changing supply voltage (ie, when the alternator is charging or not, etc.) This compensation is necessary for an accurate alarm set point.
The calibration procedure works like this:
After proper installation, the coolant gauge sensor will need to be temporarily disconnected from the harness in the engine bay- this is important. With the key in the on position, a calibration button on the coolant alarm will need to be held for 5 seconds. 3 beeps of the alarm will signal that calibration is complete. The coolant gauge sensor can be reconnected after the alarm is calibrated.
NOTE: Instructions are generic and based on a 93-97 80 series landcruiser. All other vehicles will have a similar install, but will need to locate the ignition 12v+, ground, and signal studs on the rear of the gauge cluster behind the coolant gauge. A multimeter and 12v electronics knowledge will likely be needed to determine which stud on the rear of the instrument cluster is the ignition 12v+, ground, and signal stud for the coolant gauge.

This kit comes with the ability to add a 12V LED indicator as well. The LED will flash with the alarm if connected. Adding an LED is optional. An LED does NOT come with this kit.
This kit uses the factory gauge sensor to detect temperature and therefore will need a working factory gauge temperature sensor and gauge.
This alarm is meant to be an accessory warning and is not meant to be a primary overheating indicator. It is not replacement for watching your gauges and being aware of the engine’s conditions. This alarm will is not guaranteed to prevent your engine from overheating.
